JR Action (Tat Pix)
is the street that gave a boost to the former tagger by providing a lost treasure: a camera ... By accepting this gift, JR then became his servant, he was adorn the most beautiful pictures and especially to show the world that it had eyes and was far from being dumb ...

The PGC had already completed projects JR (see note), "Portrait of a Generation" and "Face 2 Face". This is the third component of his work: "Women are heroes" ...

project

In 2008, the project "Women Are Heroes "begins. "A project in which he emphasized the dignity of women who are often the targets of conflict" (JR site). He then went to Sierra Leone, Liberia, Sudan, India, Cambodia but also in the Kibera slum in Kenya and in the heart of Morro da Providencia favela in Brazil.

JR immortalizes these women can "shoot large format portraits of these and glue them on their living spaces: walls, roofs, floors, decks, trucks, trains or buses are covered with portraits of these giants, and bear the sight of the population Local look so expressive of these women. ( Project presentation ). He then covered the paper Providencia favela or plastic sheeting roofs of Kibera. These are whole cities that have participated in these collages of portraits. A highly symbolic image of an entire community that supports its women ...

exhibitions ...
These places were often the subject of articles dealing with violence and poverty, but no message of hope. The artist did not just want to cover the homes of these people with the portrait of their inhabitants, it has organized exhibitions in situ opening the doors of these places in the world outside.
The objective was also to travel the history of these women and to educate the Westerners. The portraits are then displayed in the streets of Brussels, London and Paris.

In Paris At Nuit Blanche 2009, over 700 meters long, JR has covered the walls of the island of St. Louis immortalized those looks all around the world.

The collages were talking walls ... The special exhibition was the presence of "street audio guide" available free to anyone with a cell phone. It was thus possible to return to the intimacy of the women listening to their stories.
Supported by the mayor of the fourth district, the project has not been accepted so simply. "We had to convince the City, the Prefecture of Police, conduct tests to ensure there would be no harm to the stone because glue or water during cleaning. " (Article on Paris).
Ultimately, the project has the public reacted: some were amazed others were less enthusiastic. JR immortalized this event through a video that reveals the immensity of the work but also the gaze of onlookers. ...

Decorator cities
A draft of the measures the city and its walls that fits ... JR's collages, shows that the street is the gallery of the artist. Last year he was invited to conferences and "Art [space] public" held at the Sorbonne. In a meeting entitled "A world that is watching us," JR had explained his project and his approach to political, social but also artistic.

The AGC was present and could hear his speech that reveals the power of his project. The documentary record recounts his meeting with the artist and brings a wealth of information about his work.

In cinemas
The film was a feature of the project. A kind of grand finale of international scope.
To JR "The idea of moving the film, it has always existed (...), it lets a shot go behind the image." He adds, "get behind the image is to discover the strength of the project" (interview Médiapart )
This film was not intended to put forward the contrary "There had films made about my work but in the end the filmmakers followed me me as an artist in the midst of these contexts. And this film, I've just realized not to be in, not a making off, (..) is a film where I do not exist within the team or elsewhere. He is really focused on people, people in the street. " Indeed, no picture unveils in the film. We can only recognize his voice that interrogates an inhabitant of Kibera.

For JR, "Women Are Heroes" [it] helped keep the promise that [he] has made women who participated in [his] project, which consists in telling their story all over the world. That's what they asked me in the slums of Kibera and the Morro da Providencia favela. . ( press kit film )

Financing
One feature of JR, and he proclaims repeatedly echoing his critics, is self-financing its projects. The money he earns with the sale of his photos (some more than $ 30 000 at a sale in New York), it reinvests in its projects. This allowed him to finance the project on the island St. Louis was 130,000 euros (Le Parisien source).

As highlighted in the film credits, these projects are sponsored by any brand. For the making of the documentary, many co-led the financing (the film's budget would amount to 800 000 euros). But it must still clear that almost did not see the day. That appointment Cannes Film Festival (Critics Week), which allowed for "Women Are Heroes" to bring back a co-producer who had withdrawn from the project. JR remembers: "And at one point, a co-producer is removed and we were really on the edge by what he was missing a lot of money. And for me it was clear that since it was only a brand that was ready to put that money for me (...) I decided that no more than a logo at the beginning or end. This is essential to how people will perceive the message of this film and project. And what saved us is that when everything fell, the film was selected for Cannes and other co-producers are back in the game and was able to finish the film ( maintenance Médiapart ).

But one point of view simply graffiti and street art, media work of JR makes it a change in consciousness or is it just a fad?
A change in consciousness ... not completely sure yet as shown negative view of the collages of the Ile Saint-Louis in video from Nuit Blanche but a slight step including the steps of City Hall to support this project or that a bill-poster, as it likes qualify JR, received the TED prize. Indeed, after Bill Clinton or Bono is JR who was honored as a personality that marked the year 2011 for his involvement in "technology, entertainment and design." The winner receives $ 100,000, and aims to make a charitable cause. This price will not change the steps of the artist the day he received the award itself was "arrested by Chinese authorities in Shanghai to be placarded photos without permission. (Source Clarkmagazine and New York Times). We will wait for March to know the "hope" of the artist ...

With "Women are heroes", he has also put our eyes on the present place of graffiti and street art in cinemas. For a year we could see three feature films in theaters. " Whole Train", who found, after two years, a distributor to distribute the film in French cinemas, but also "Making the Wall "Banksy and" Women are heroes . Even if these films do not stay long showing (two weeks to "Whole Train") and even if it is more the headliners (and JR Banksy) that the graffiti or street art attract the film industry believe that it is hoped Producers and distributors are increasingly interested in supporting projects related to this art.
